Daily Dose of Art -- February 3, 2011
This shot is on the front steps of what I believe is called the "Saint Paul Cathedral" in downtown Sao Paulo, Brazil. Such a beautiful structure in quite a gorgeous city. While touring the inside, something that struck me was finding people praying over a casket which contained a statue which I assumed was supposed to be Jesus. I found this striking because it seemed as if these people were so focused on Jesus' death, which is incredibly powerful and important. However, what about the celebration of his resurrection? That is where the hope in this gospel story lies.

Meet Beatriz. I believe that is how you spell her name. She is a gorgeous little Brazilian girl who I met in Sao Paulo. From the minute I met her the only thing I wanted to do was to get a good shot of her eyes. A few days later, I got what I wanted!

So I apologize I haven't uploaded a photo these past two days, but I have an excuse! I've spent the last 30 hours or so traveling from Sao Paulo, Brazil to the arctic Indianapolis. But don't worry, photos are back.
This snapped this shot a few days ago in Sao Paulo. Giovanna had a toy camera and loved to mimic me and all of my picture taking. So I decided to do the natural thing and take a picture of her taking a picture of me. Miss this girl.

Sao Paulo, Brazil. Day 1.
Welcome to Sao Paulo, Brazil! After a long 11 hour flight from Detroit we landed at 9am local time (6am ET). We managed our way through customs and were greeted by the lovely, warm, inviting faces of Luciana, Pastor Arminio Kopp, and Pastor Ricardo. First reaction: im tired and this place is not as cold as Indiana!
The ride from the airport to the church where we are staying? I'm not sure because I slept a majority of the way but I overheard something in the area of two hours. Each time I'd wake up I'd see us taking a new turn down another street with more skyscrapers and buildings. Sao Paulo is HUGE!
After arriving at the church, getting our things settled in, and having a quick meal, we wasted no time and got to work on the job site across the street where we are helping to build the new sanctuary.
After a solid afternoon's work, Luciana and some or our hosts walked us down the street to try out a local favorite dessert. I have no idea what it is called but imagine frozen coconut goodness. One word: delicious. This shot is of Jadde (pronounced jah-day with kind of a french twist) walking my mom to the shop.
We then had some time to relax and get to know the people some more before eating an absolutely DELICIOUS meal.
Things I learned about Brazil today:
-Brazilians are more diverse than I ever imagined.
-Brazilians are extremely warm and inviting.
-Brazilians are beautiful people.
-Brazilians eat amazing food.
-January in Brazil is not like January in Indiana.

This is Alex. I met Alex today, my first day in Sao Paulo, Brazil. First thing you have to know about Alex: he is the opposite of shy. He will introduce himself to you and talk your ear off right away, regardless of whether or not you can even understand him. Oh and by the way, he's pretty photogenic and loves to tell you. Leave Alex a message and I can show him what you have to say!
